We invite you to enjoy the famous Dumji festival with a mask dancing of the monks, dressed in the colourful costumes and armed with the swords.
Every year the Sherpa people of Nepal celebrate a special festival, which takes place in the Everest region and is called Dumji. The main idea of the festival is to honour the anniversary of Guru Rinpoche’s birth on the lotus flower. The tradition of this celebration started around 365 years ago. We invite everyone who want to see this colourful performance with his own eyes to Dumji Festival trek.
The most interesting part of the festival for the tourist is Chhyam. It is a mask dancing of the monks, dressed in the colourful costumes and armed with the swords.
The festival is performed in the Namche Monastery, the Khumjung Monastery and the Rimijung Monastery at the same time though the celebrations themselves may differ from place to place.
The dates of the festival vary every year but it is always celebrated in the end of May – June, during the monsoon season.
