The Makalu Base Camp trek is a good choice for those who really like nature. The trek will give you a unique chance to enjoy the variety of landscapes, to introduce yourself this the culture of the local people (like Sherpa, Rai and Limbu) and to look at the world’s highest mountains, like Mt. Everest, from a different angle.
Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world (8,481m). But as far as it is rather difficult to access, the trek to its base camp is not so popular. But if you are ready to start a journey of your life then your first step is a flight from Kathmandu city to Tumlingtar. The trailhead is just a few hours drive from the airport.
Your journey will start on the Rai people lands. This is an ethnic group of people who lives mostly in the hills of eastern Nepal. You will walk through cloud forests, alpine meadows and rhododendron forests. If you are not very strict in dates, we recommend you to come in spring. This time the flowers bloom red, purple, pink and white colours.
Breathtaking cliffs, glaciers, and amazingly wonderful waterfalls will meet you along the trail. Reaching the higher elevations you will be met by the Sherpa people, an ethnically Tibetan group living near Everest, who will give you all their hospitality.
Makalu Base Camp is the best opportunity to see Kangshung face of Everest – one of the Tibetan sides of Mt. Everest. And if you are lucky enough you will, maybe, see the Red Panda, who live in the Makalu Barun National Park, which is the eighth largest in Nepal.
